Program Description

Event Details

Stories on the Spectrum is a sensory-friendly monthly gathering where neurodiverse adults and support staff are invited to hang out, enjoy snacks, and do an activity.

This month we'll have four activity options: coloring, decorating a mug, making a sensory bottle, or playing the board game Ticket to Ride.  Here's a brief run-down of what you can expect at the event:

What to bring: Bring yourself and any special snacks or drinks you enjoy.  (We will be providing snack-sized chips and soda!) If you have noise-canceling headphones, feel free to bring those too.  If you decide to make a sensory bottle and would like to add any small items to it, please bring them.

When to arrive:  We'll be opening the event at 2:00pm and closing at 4:00pm, so you can arrive and depart at a time that works for you.  Staff will be on hand to help you if you have any questions.

Stimming and Movement:  Feel free to move around and stim as much as you'd like to during the event.  It's all good!

Textures:  The sensory bottle project will use oil, glitter, orbeez, glue, and other materials that might get on your hands or spill if you aren't careful.  Mugs will be decorated using markers.  Paper towels will be available in the room and there are sinks in nearby bathrooms if you need to wash your hands.

Bathrooms:  Public restroom access will be available inside the library.  Friendly staff at the circulation desk will be happy to point you in the right direction if you need help getting oriented.

Music:  We'll play quiet background music during the event.

Socialization:  This event is a great place to meet new people and chat while working on your choice of activity, but you will not be pressured to talk if you don't want to.

Ticket to Ride:  Ticket to Ride is a beginner-friendly board game!  You do not have to have any prior experience playing to join in.  Library assistant Emily is happy to teach you to play.  :)

Remember:

  • This is a safe and inclusive space where everyone is welcome.
  • It's okay to be yourself and enjoy this time in your own way.
  • If you need anything during the event, just let one of our friendly staff members know.

We hope this explanation helps you feel excited and prepared for this event. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out to Emily at echurchcb@coosbaylibrary.org

See you soon!
